What is the origin of the military term "ten-hut"?

"Ten-hut" is the gruff abbreviation of the word "attention," that's all. It's what comes out when a drill sergeant shouts the command, easier to say at full shout than "attention." It literallly means the command, "Come to attention!"

Like a conductor who raises his baton to get the orchestras attention so that they may begin together, the first syllable "TEN" (or even "a tennn") is given lower audibility to get the group's focus and the "HUT" is forcifully almost shouted as the indication when they all should "Snap To" or stand at 'attention' at the same moment. Ten=Get ready....HUT...Snap To Together as a group.
